magur macher jhol or catfish curry |
It is very much popular catfish (known as Magur) in West Bengal. Here it cooked
in flevoured gravy to make it delicious. Catfish meat helps in blood purification and help to fight
against dieses.
Ingredients
Magur
fish 300 gm
(6 pcs)
Garlic
cloves (chopped) 6 – 7
Onion
(chopped) 1 big
Ginger
paste 1 tbsp
Cumin
powder 2 tsp
Red
chilli powder 1 tsp
Green
chillies 2 - 3
Coriander
powder 1 tsp
Turmeric
powder 2 tsp
Kashmiri
mirch powder ½ tsp
Bay
leaves 2
Potato in cubes 2
big
Garam
masala paste 1 tsp
Salt to
taste
Sugar 1
tsp
Oil 3
tbsp
Method
First
properly wash the fishes and marinate with turmeric powder and salt for 10 – 15
minutes.
Within
this time finely chop garlic and ginger. Make paste of ginger then make smooth
paste of garam masala with 2 cardamoms, 1 clove, 1 inch cinnamon.
Heat
oil in wok, add fish pieces and sallow fry from both sides, remove and keep
aside.
Add
potato pieces and fry till light brown, remove from oil and keep aside.
In
this same oil add chopped garlic then stir until light brown.
Then
add chopped onion and stir until light brown then add sugar and mix well.
Add
chopped tomato and stir till soft and mix well.
Add
ginger paste, cumin powder, chilli powder, kashmiri mirch powder and cook until
oil gets separated from masala.

Then
add fried potatoes, bay leaves and mix well and cook for a minute.

Heat-up
some water on other oven.

Add
coriander powder into potatoes and mix well.

Now
add required water, salt, turmeric powder and mix well. Cover and cook for 4 –
5 minutes or until potatoes turn soft.

Now
add fried fishes, green chillies and again cover and cook for 2 – 3 minutes.

Open
cover and add garam masala paste then mix well.
